Kesultanan Serdang dipengaruhi oleh budaya dan person-person Karo dan Simalungun. Berikut Silsilahnya


1728 - 1782 Tuanku Umar Johan Pahlawan Alam Shah bin Tuanku Panglima Paderap [Kejeruan Junjungan], Raja of Serdang. b. 1703, third son of Tuanku Panglima Padrap [Pidali], Amir of Deli, by his Royal wife, Tuanku Ampuan Sampali. Appointed as Heir Apparent by his father. Expelled from Deli, by his elder half-brother, after the death of his father in 1720. Taken to Serdang together with his mother and younger brother. Proclaimed as ruler of Serdang with the title of Tuanku Umar Johan Pahlawan Alam Shah, by the Datuk Sunggal and other nobles, 1728. He d. 1782 (bur. Sampali), having had issue, three sons and one daughter:
• 1) Tengku Malim ibni al-Marhum Tuanku Umar. He d.s.p. unm.
• 2) Tengku Ainan, of Kejeruan Ujong, who succeeded as Tuanku Ainan Johan Pahlawan Alam Shah ibni al-Marhum Tuanku Umar, Raja of Serdang - see below.
• 3) Tengku Sabjana ibni al-Marhum Tuanku Umar, Raja Muda, of Kejeruan Ujong. Wakil of Kampong Kelambir from 1782. He had issue, including two sons:
• a) Tengku Usman bin Tengku Sabjana, Tengku Panglima Besar, of Sungai Tuan. He d. after 28th January 1823, having had issue, two sons:
• i) Tengku Zainal-Abidin [Raja Bidin] bin Tengku Usman. He d. after 25th August 1865.
• ii) Tengku Muhammad 'Ali bin Tengku Usman, Tengku Panglima Besar, of Sungai Tuan. He d. after 13th August 1879, having had issue, a son:
• (1) Tengku Muhammad Daud bin Tengku Muhammad 'Ali, Tengku Indra Pahlawan, of Deli.
• b) Tengku Muhammad Thakir [Mattakir] bin Tengku Sabjana, Pangeran Muda Sri di-Raja. Heir Apparent in succession to his father. He d. 1865, having had issue, a son:

• 1) Tengku Zainal Abidin ibni al-Marhum Tuanku Ainan Johan Pahlawan Alam Shah, Tengku Besar (s/o Tuanku Sri Alam). m. Tengku Sri Deli, daughter of Raja Nobat Shah ibni al-Marhum Raja Hitam, Raja Bendahara Kejuruan Jipura Bilan Jentera Malai, of Langkat. He was k.v.p. at Kampung Punggai, 1815, having had issue, five sons and three daughters:

Paduka Sri Sultan Tuanku Sulaiman Sharif ul-'Alam Shah ibni al-Marhum Sultan Bashar un-din, Sultan and Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Serdang, by his second wife, Inche' Kurnia Purba, educ. Malay Sch., Perbuangan; MULO, Batavia. Became Heir Apparent at birth. Recognised as such by the Governor-General of the NEI and granted the title of Tengku Besar, 8th October 1918. Invested with the title of Tengku Putra Mahkota 1932. Served as Deputy Ruler during the latter part of his father's reign. Acceded to the Indonesian Republic together with his father on 4th December 1945. Succeeded his father as head of the Royal House of Serdang, 13th October 1946. Dir. Paduka Sri Sultan Tuanku Sulaiman Sharif ul-'Alam Shah ibni al-Marhum Sultan Bashar un-din, Sultan and Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Serdang, by his fourth wife, Tuanku Hajjah Zahara, educ. HLS, MULO, SMS and Univ. Sumatera Utara, Medan (SM 1962); and Univ. Jayabaya, Jakarta (SH 1969). Styled Tengku Temenggong Mangku Negara, before his accession. Sec. Dewan Kesenian Medan 1972-1975, newspaper columnist for "Waspada" since 1987. Succeeded on the death of his elder brother as Head of the Royal House of Serdang, 28th January 2001.
